Gravity Stack, the wholly owned tech, consulting and managed services subsidiary of global law firm Reed Smith LLP, is announcing the official formation of its Business Advisory Solutions team. Over the last year, the firm has been quietly adding industry experts to its Business Advisory Solutions team, reflecting the firm’s intention to compete with the Big Four and alternative legal service providers in the areas of consulting, technology and managed services.

Since it launched in 2018, Gravity Stack’s team has been leveraging technology for eDiscovery and Investigations as well as contract intelligence. During that time, Gravity Stack has received multiple industry awards and recognition for its homegrown software solutions as well as for pioneering the concept of a law firm tech subsidiary.

But, over the last year, its Business Advisory Solutions has become a third pillar of the business. “I think firms would be surprised to discover that our BAS team has won RFPs for data forensics, CLM implementations and transformation projects against some of the biggest consultancies, ALSPs and Big Four accounting firms,” says MD Bryon Bratcher, who was recently nominated for ALM’s Innovator of the Year award. “Industry surveys continue to show that corporate legal departments are increasing their spend on best in breed technology and data solutions but, according to Gartner, over 50% of GCs say they are disappointed in the results of transformation projects. What our clients need is a trusted partner to sherpa them through the process. Having worked inside of Reed Smith for years and based on conversations with our clients, we know that these are services corporate legal departments are coming to expect from their outside counsel, and they want a partner who understands the values that are important to lawyers.”

Gravity Stack recently named Grant Hewlett as the Head of its Business Advisory Solutions team, which has decades worth of experience in technology, information governance, data forensics and consulting. Hewlett, who has a background in technology and data forensics at both Big Four and AmLaw 100 firms, explains how Gravity Stack, a relatively new company, is winning deals against legacy providers. “Our clients appreciate that we truly understand the incentives and work habits of attorneys and our ability to tailor our solutions to create meaningful impact,” says Hewlett. “We also do a significant amount of work with companies in life sciences, healthcare and financial services. For both those reasons, our position adjacent to our parent firm Reed Smith serves as a massive asset.”

The Business Advisory Solutions team, is growing and plans to increase headcount in 2022. “Working for Gravity Stack,” says Bratcher, “is an unparalleled opportunity for people who want to work with cutting edge data and technology solutions for the legal industry.”
